Walnut Shell Run 072709

Page history last edited by bk 14 years, 8 months ago

Purpose:

Move towards developing baseline data of reactor behavior on a single fuel, moving towards commonly available fuels. Test procedures and equipment setup for developing this baseline.

Results:

Notes:

This run has a number of data gaps in it, it is comprised of about 10 log files including some 5 to 10 minute gaps (shown as interpolated lines in the graph).

Combustion temperatures are likely below the level that would normally be seen due to a blockage in the air nozzle behind the combustion thermocouple.

Gas out above 300°C at some points when pulling 10 inH2O. 10 inH2O was choosen to intentionally overpull the reactor, it appeared to do so.

Air in reached a max of 800°C. Staying above 600°C for the latter part of the run.

Visible combustion in pyrolysis zone (via watchglass) at high pull rates.

Filter pressure line was not hooked up before 30 minutes.

Drop in combustion vacuum at 80 minutes was likely from hopper refilling (the PID control kept the reactor at the setpoint, despite extra air inflow through the hopper), or discovery that grate was not moving, so grate was manually shaken, will check notes.

CO2 sensor response does seem to change with different pulls (and rose at start up), so we are getting some form of information from it (CO2 sensor is currently planned to be used as a qualitative indicator of gas composition change).

The GCU was programmed to run through a series of randomized pull rates, using PID control. This process was tested at 30 second intervals between 87-110 minutes, with the start of the test procedure at 5 minute intervals between 117-150 minutes, but was cut short.

PID control worked well.

Cavaet: Flow meters are still being calibrated and tested. During cold test air flow reading was ~0.55 of gas flow reading.

Contour plot of temperatures with the reactor. Cavaet: The plotting function does not interpolate the gaps in data so the x-axis is unfortunately not relatable. Plans to fix this issue.

Notes

The upward migration of combustion is visible in the latter part of the graph. During start up pyrolysis temperatures remained low.

Plot from the 30 second randomized test runs.

Pyrolysis temperatures excluded from plot for clarity.
