DIY Projects, Experimenters, Inventors and the GEK Gasifier

Customer Highlights:

Frank writes:

“Please post this picture, taken this afternoon, Thursday Sept 17 after I made it to the top of

Berthoud Pass 11,307. My house is at 8665 ft, which makes the climb over 2750 feet

in approx 15 miles, average grade over 6%(it’s downhill to Fraser, then up)

The GEK performed flawlessly going up hill, but I always have trouble going downhill,

and had to boost it with gas a few times (3 or 4 ticks of the electric fuel pump)

It’s like the throttle being closed down strangles it.

But it flies uphill (steady load- wide open – 2nd or 3rd gear,

and I even get some reaction from my “carburetor”- the butterfly valve.

Usually, I am on full woodgas- I suspect I have some vacuum leaks.

Frank”

Below is a list of only a few of our customers that have used the GEK as a development platform for a wide range of projects. People have used the GEK Gasifier systems to develop or integrate projects such as electrical generation, vehicle conversions, heating, combined heat and power (CHP), automation and control, or inventing and developing novel uses and designs.

Choosing a Project:

If you don't have any equipment yet, its best to match your GEK system with your intended end use.

  • GEK III, Weld-It-Yourself: This kit is offered only in the 10kW (3'' Reduction Bell) size as a mild steel. If you are confident with welding projects and have the set up, this is a good starter kit for the price.  One of the perks about starting with the weld-it-yourself kit instead of the raw CAD files, is that this kit comes with all of the extra odds and ends (gaskets, tubing, insulation, thermocouples, CO meter, fuel moisture meter, dual channel pressure sensors, filter drum, filter, gas lines, tubing, high temp sealants, itsy bitsy miscellaneous hardware, etc) that really pulls the whole working project together. All the sourcing and ordering of all the parts will start to add up when starting with the raw CAD files. This kit is recommended if you just want to fast forward to the fun part and save some money and time in the process.
  • Basic GEK IV, Assemble-Yourself: Some example projects that best fit the Basic GEK are flaring off the wood gas for thermal applications, gas or thermal chemical analysis, or testing difficult feed stocks. If you are looking at modifying the gasifier for experimental use, this option might be a good starter kit for you.
  • GEK TOTTI: This kit best fits the use of running the GEK Gasifier with an engine combined with either a vehicle or a generator that you may already have. This kit comes with the TOTTI add-ons which increases the efficiency of the overall reaction which yields a clean gas fit for engine integrations.  The GEK TOTTI add-ons can be included with either the Level III or Level IV kits.
  • PowerPallets: The PowerPallet series is highly recommended if you want to start out on the right foot with fully functional equipment 'out of the box'.  If you would like to start with a known platform for developing within a wide scope of feasible peripheral projects, this might be a good fit for you.
  • Process Control Unit (PCU): The PCU is required for meaningful integrated projects and development as it has everything you may ever need for testing, data logging, and control. The PowerPallet series already comes with a PCU, but you will need this in addition to any of the other kits if you do not already have a testing equipment. Along with the PCU, you will also want to purchase the NEMA Enclosure and Mounting Hardware which is a water proof project box equipt with mounts for the PCU, switch mounts, DIN rails, and connectors for example. This is essential for protecting the PCU and keeps your project reliable and organized.
  • Research Experimenters Kit: This is a really good kit if you are interested in researching the further details of the science of gasification concerning flow rates, flow control, tar testing, and thermal profiles.
  • Gas Analyzer: If you don't already have dedicated equipment for your gasification research, you will want to add this to your list. Check out the link to see if the specs fit your research needs.

GEK Sizing Guide:

The GEK comes in two different sizes according to the size of the reduction bell and its corresponding output for electrical applications. You will want to chose the size that fits the range of power demand of your end use

  • 3'' Reduction Bell (10kW):
    • For electrical generation, this size will support between 2-10kW.
  • 4'' Reduction Bell (20kW):
    • For electrical generation, this size will support between 4-20kW.
    • This size is recommended for vehicle conversions for engines up to 100 HP. (The use scenario for vehicle conversions is quite different than constant electrical loads. See the page "Convert Engines and Generators" for more details on vehicle conversions).
